About Hopkins House
Built in 1919 and acquired by Smith in 1920, Hopkins operates as a small food cooperative for 15 students (sophomores and above) who buy food collectively, cook communally, and share cleaning and governance via weekly house meetings. The community emphasizes sustainability and social justice, cultivating relationships with local farms. Views of the Lyman Conservatory gardens and Mount Holyoke range are a highlight.
History & namesake
- Hopkins is not named for a person: it keeps the name of the pre-existing “Hopkins Houses” property (which dated to 1861; the present house was built in 1919), which President William Allan Neilson acquired for the college in 1920. (Smith College — Hopkins House)
