Off Campus
The groceries, pharmacies, cash machines, and everyday errands within reach of the houses — with how long each takes on foot or by bike. Pick your house to get times from your own front door.
Walking and cycling times are estimates from straight-line distance, rounded to the nearest five minutes — treat them as a guide, not a promise. Ratings aren't shown: each name links out to Google Maps for live hours and reviews.
Groceries
River Valley Co-op
Member-owned co-op with a strong local and organic slant. Furthest of the groceries.
State Street Fruit Store
The closest thing to a corner grocery — small, but near enough for a five-minute errand from much of campus.
Stop & Shop
Full-size supermarket up King Street. A PVTA stop sits right outside it, so it's an easy bus run with bags.
Pharmacy & Health
Cooley Dickinson Hospital
Northampton's hospital, with the emergency department. Worth knowing before you need it.
CVS Pharmacy
The chain option right on Main Street, with the everyday-essentials aisles alongside the pharmacy counter.
Money & Mail
Main Street ATMs
Florence Bank, TD, M&T, Chase and Northampton Cooperative all sit within a couple of blocks downtown.
Getting Out of Town
Greyhound stop (Old South Street)
Greyhound picks up curbside on Old South Street by the Northampton Market convenience store — about a minute's walk from the Peter Pan terminal, and easy to mix up with it, so check which one your ticket says.
Peter Pan Bus Terminal
Intercity coaches leave from Roundhouse Plaza by Crafts Avenue — the bus counterpart to the train station, and the usual way to Springfield, Boston or New York. Tickets online; the counter is closed.
Everyday Errands
Foster Farrar True Value Hardware
Hardware, hooks, extension cords — the things house living quietly requires.
Northampton Bicycle
Bike shop for sales and repairs — worth it, given how much closer a bike makes everything.
Walmart
The big-box run for whatever a dorm room turns out to be missing — up on King Street next to Big Y, so a bike or the bus rather than a walk.
Books & Going Out
Academy of Music Theatre
Historic downtown theatre running films and live performances — the closest thing to a cinema, and an easy walk.
Raven Used Books
Deep used stacks, and the better bet for a course book you'd rather not pay list price for.
Thornes Marketplace
Independent shops stacked through an old department store; the default "let's go downtown".
