About Friedman Apartments
Completed in 2016, the Friedman complex offers 18 fully furnished four-person apartments across five buildings, each named for a pioneering alumna (first African American, Native American, Middle Eastern, Latina, and East Asian graduates). Residents must form a confirmed group of four and apply via a seniority-based lottery; financial aid implications should be reviewed in advance.
History & namesake
- The five apartment buildings honor Smith “firsts”: Cromwell (Otelia Cromwell 1900, first African American graduate), DeCora (Angel DeCora 1896, first Native American student), Hashimy (Sabiha Yassin Hashimy 1937, first Middle Eastern student), Machado (Salomé Amelia Machado 1883, first Latina student), and Ninomiya (Tei Ninomiya 1910, first Asian graduate).
